Get to Know Us

Farming avocados in North County San Diego is 3 generations strong in the Wollam Family. Who doesn't love a California grown avocado? San Diego County has the perfect climate for this superfood and our California standards produce the best avocado on the market. Unfortunately, the continuing rising costs of water and encroachment of housing developments on farm land has made it harder and harder for farmers to stay profitable and continue growing our favorite fruit. We decided to try to do something about that. Drone technology is rapidly advancing and its uses in agriculture is becoming more common, however not on crops such as avocados because of the nature of how they are grown. Unlike row crops or orange trees that are meticulously pruned, avocado trees grow "wild" on steep slopes. This causes huge problems when using drone multi spectral imaging as the ground is not detectable from the canopy thus interfering with data interpolation. We decided to fix that problem! By removing the ground from the canopy we can now use multi-spectral imaging to determine the health of the trees. Multi-spectral imaging allows us to see health issues with the trees before the human eye can spot them, thus helping us to determine courses of action before trees are detrimentally damaged. This along with orthomosaics will allows us to track the health of groves over time to increase yield while decreasing costs.
